Policies of the Journal regarding Review, Plagiarism, Copyright, Open Access and Archiving Policy

Review Policy

Peer-review policy of Focus on ELT is intended to maintain a high quality of evaluation and ensure that we showcase good quality articles investigating issues in the field of English Language Teaching.

Prior to sending manuscripts to peer review, the manuscripts submitted to Focus on ELT are initially evaluated by the editors-in-chief and/or section editors in order to guarantee a high standard in scientific knowledge dissemination through scholarly work. At this stage, the manuscripts are checked first to see whether the topics are of interest to Focus on ELT and our readers. If the manuscripts present studies/cases with less originality, flaws in the design, poor argumentation, the editorial board could decide to desk-reject the manuscripts. In case of a submission out of the journal’s scope or that is problematic due to originality and design, the authors are notified immediately so that there might be no backlog in the editorial processes.

Following the initial screening as is described, if the manuscripts meet the minimum criteria, then the editors send them to at least two reviewers, whose expertise matches with the topics of the manuscripts. FELT adopts a double-blind peer-review process, with a minimum of two reviewers per article. The reviewing process is highly dependent on the reviewers. However, Focus on ELT grants a minimum of 4-6 weeks for the first round of the reviewing process, which could be revisited depending on a request from a potential reviewer to ask for more time to complete it.

When the required number of reviewers’ reports is maintained, the handling editor(s) go through the reports so that a decision to accept or reject the manuscript could be reached. Nevertheless, the editors have the right to send the manuscript to another expert who could also evaluate the manuscript in case of the earlier reports contradict to some extent. At the end of the reviewing process of the first round, based on the reviewers’ recommendation, a decision letter of acceptance or reject is issued to the corresponding author.

When the authors are recommended to work on their manuscript for potential revisions by reviewers, the authors are given 4-6 weeks to handle these revisions before returning their revised version. Upon the arrival of the revised version, when needed, the initial reviewers are asked to evaluate the revised version and see whether the authors have handled their suggestions and concerns for establishing excellence in the quality of the manuscript.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is one of the most major obstacles preventing the development of science all around the world. To avoid plagiarism, all the manuscripts submitted to our journal are checked with a plagiarism checker software (namely Ithenticate) 1) before they are sent to the reviewers and 2) if accepted before publishing.

Focus on ELT Journal believes that prevention of plagiarism starts with a quality review process. We also expect our reviewers to contribute to this process with their strict reviews. However, authors of the published articles should be aware that all the responsibility regarding plagiarism solely belongs to them. If any issue arises after the publication of an article regarding plagiarism, authors are asked for clarification about the issue. The editors then decide whether to retract the article from the journal or keep it as is. If the editors decide on the retraction of the article in question, a warning notice is put to the journal regarding the retracted article.
